Although everyone says we should never judge the book by its cover, somewhere we always do and you have all right to judge this book by its title. Holes is a novel by Louis Sachar. The title of the novel represents the book's essence completely. It is a story involving 3 generations carrying a curse and finding a treasure no one has found for 3 generations.
The book received 5/5 from Common Sense Media and 4/5 from Goodreads. It was a critical success and people loved the book despite it being a little different from normal. It won the 1998 U.S. National Book Award For Young People's Literature and the 1999 Newbery Medal for the year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children".
The book centers around a young unlucky teenager, Stanley Yelnats, who is falsely accused of stealing a pair of sneakers and is sent to a boy's detention camp, known as Camp Green Lake, by the juvenile. The Yelnats suffer from a curse because of Stanley's great-great-grandfather also referred to as "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather" every time something bad happens in the house. The irony of the name of the camp is that there is no lake there, it's just a dry piece of land where there used to be a lake decades ago and now is inhabited by highly venomous yellow-spotted lizards.
"If only, if only," the woodpecker sighs,"The bark on the tree was just a little bit softer.".While the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely, He cries to the moo--oo--oon,"If only, if only." -The Yelnats Pig Lullaby
The activity of the camp is that every day the kids have to dig a hole about 5 feet deep, 7 days a week. And if you discover anything, it must be reported to the warden immediately. It was difficult for Stanley in the starting but slowly he adjusted. Later, Stanley discovers that it is not just a punishment given but that the warden is trying to find a treasure that sank in the lake and that the treasure belonged to his great grandfather and it is his journey towards finding the truth.
It is a great piece of work by the author. It has many stories hidden and each time a mystery is solved, another story opens. But by the end of the story, all your questions will be answered that's for sure. The book involves suspense, humor, and a compelling force to sit and complete the story. I am not gonna age define this book, but it is a great classic and it should definitely be in the completed or to be completed list of books.
